Australia wants to ban kids from social media. Will it work?

Messaging services and gaming sites, however, will not be restricted, as will some sites that can be accessed without an account like YouTube, which has prompted questions over how regulators will determine what is and isn’t a social media platform in a fast-moving landscape. In 2011, South Korea passed its “shutdown law” which prevented children under 16 from playing internet games between 22:30 and 6:00, but the rules - which faced backlash - were later scrapped citing the need to “respect the rights of youths”. More recently France introduced legislation requiring social media platforms to block access to children under 15 without parental consent. His experience is a cautionary tale that shows why the Australian government’s proposed social media ban on children under 16 is necessary, says his mother Emma, who is also using a pseudonym. But while many parents have applauded the move, some experts have questioned whether kids should - or even can - be barred from accessing social media, and what the adverse effects of doing so may be.Albanese says the ban - which will cover platforms such as X, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram - is about protecting kids from the “harms” of social media.

Jesse Eisenberg Reveals If He'd Return for a Social Network Sequel

Thankfully, however, writer Aaron Sorkin has shared his feelings on how The Social Network—which also starred Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer and Justin Timberlake—might be adapted now almost 15 years later. Though on exactly why he thinks the Capitol attack and Facebook are linked, the 63-year-old kept it coy, adding, “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.” · So while it doesn’t sound like a Social Network 2 would be a direct continuation, it sounds like there would likely still be room for Jesse’s interpretation of Mark.In fact, the star of The Social Network, who brought Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg to life in the 2010 film, is all for being involved in the rumored sequel—or any onscreen role. The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg brought Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to life onscreen almost 15 years ago. Social media ban for under-16s 'on the table' in UK

Speaking on the Today programme, on BBC Radio 4, he said he would "do what it takes" to keep people and in particular children safe online. He also announced further research into the impact tech such as smartphones and social media was having on young people, claiming there was currently "no firm, peer-reviewed evidence".The public and parents back an updated Act that embeds an overarching duty of care on tech firms, and the Prime Minister must act quickly and decisively to deliver this unfinished job," it said in a post on X. Iona Silverman, from law firm Freeths, described a potential social media ban as "a drop in an ocean-sized problem", saying teenagers would just find new ways to access problematic material online.Kyle said he wanted to see evidence that tech firms were delivering suitable age verification for users, and that the sector was moving towards having "safety baked in from the outset." Social media and messaging platforms could face significant fines potentially measured in the billions if they do not comply with the OSA.In February, the mother of the murdered teenager Brianna Ghey told the BBC it did not go far enough. As well as restricting social media for young people, some suggest their use of smartphones should also be more tightly controlled.

Trump promised to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, but don't bank on it yet

Every retiree in the country, I'd imagine, heard President-elect Donald Trump's promise to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, so much so that they might be sitting one day soon at breakfast wondering if they should rush to reduce their tax withholdings for 2025. But don't put that one on your to-do list just yet. We're talking about fairly significant hurdles for such a change to take place as early as next year, if ever. ... "Probably the earliest chance for the Social Security benefits provision to be considered by Congress would be if it is included in a major tax bill introduced in 2025 under budget reconciliation procedures," said Mark Luscombe, principal analyst for Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting in Riverwoods, Illinois.Your money: All Social Security retirees should do this by Nov. 20 · Congress can use the special reconciliation process in some cases to speed up high-priority tax, spending and debt limit legislation — and avoid a filibuster in the Senate. A long list of soon-to-be-vanishing tax breaks will be a key concern for Congress next year because the many individual provisions in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — which was pushed when Trump served as the 45th president of the United States — expire at the end of 2025.Luscombe said eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits through the budget reconciliation process would prove to be quite a challenge because the loss of revenue would be substantial and need to be offset.Anna Taylor, deputy leader of the tax policy group at Deloitte in Washington, D.C., maintains that the president-elect's proposal to get rid of taxes on Social Security benefits would not work in a reconciliation package.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the legislation is needed to protect young people from the "harms" of social media, something many parent groups have echoed. The government says will it rely on some form of age-verification technology to implement the restrictions, and options will be tested in the coming months. The onus will be on the social media platforms to add these processes themselves.Norway has recently pledged to follow in the country’s footsteps, and last week the UK’s technology secretary said a similar ban was “on the table” - though he later added “not... at the moment”. DEI programs can actually escalate hostility and racial tensions, new study claims; NYT accused of spiking story

Research by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) and Rutgers University’s Social Perception Lab found that certain DEI practices pushed on participants led some of them to become irrationally confrontational and antagonistic. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs popular in corporate America and at US colleges that are meant to tackle discrimination might instead actually foment hostility and racial tensions, according to a new study.Participants that read the anti-racist material developed a “hostile attribution bias” and were more likely to believe in punitive measures for offenders of so-called microaggressions even without …Study co-author and NCRI Chief Science Officer Joel Finkelstein told Fox News researchers took ideas that are prominent in DEI lectures and training, and explored how exposing people to that ideology would affect them.Participants that read the anti-racist material developed a “hostile attribution bias” and were more likely to believe in punitive measures for offenders of so-called microaggressions even without evidence, according to the study.
